WHAT DIVISION WILL MY CHILD PLAY IN?

Divisional placement is mostly determined by your child’s age as of April 30, 2009 for younger kids, and by a combination of age and tryouts at older levels. We also have a Girls Softball program for ages 9 and up.

Age Division

6 Rookie Ball

7 Junior Minors Lower (machine or coach-pitch)

8 Junior Minors Lower or Upper (your choice – Upper is more competitive and teammate requests cannot be considered – see below)

9 Junior Minors Upper or Girls Softball (girls age 9 and up) or co-ed Minors Baseball (kid-pitch)

10-12 Co-ed Minors or Majors Baseball (assignment by tryout) or Girls Softball

13-16 Juniors/Senior Baseball and Girls Softball

WHY DOES DLL REQUIRE THAT EVERY FAMILY VOLUNTEER SOME TIME DURING THE SEASON?

There are commercial, for-profit vendors which provide baseball “experiences” for a fee and are run on a drop-your-kid-off basis. We are happy to give references for those who prefer that style of program.

Little League is different. We are a community league, a place for kids and parents to team up together. Your involvement can range from helping coach a team to flipping burgers for an hour at a cookout. But we ask every family to help in some way.

HOW ARE TEAMS ROSTERED? CAN I REQUEST A PARTICULAR TEAM OR TEAMMATE?

For younger levels (Rookie Ball and Junior Minor Lower) we welcome coach or teammate requests given to us at the time of registration.

In older levels, many youth leagues have found that rostering “by friendships” tends to create teams of all boys versus teams of mostly girls, older kids against younger kids, or more serious players against more social athletes. This, in turn, leads to one-sided results
and negative experiences all around. For this reason, after the Junior Minor Lower level we do our best to roster for diversity and balance, rather than through teammate requests.

ARE SCHOLARSHIPS AVALABLE?

Absolutely. Email directors@downtownlittleleague.org.

WHEN DOES THE SEASON START? WHAT IS THE GAME SCHEDULE?

We have pre-season (mostly indoor) practice events in early March. Games begin in early April and end the weekend of June 21-22. Most divisions (except Rookie Ball and Challenger) will play one game per weekend together with a few weekday afternoon or evening games in May or June. We are dependent on permits, but our general plan is:

Rookie Ball (6 YOs) Saturday mornings, 8-10 AM
JM Lower (7-8 YOs) Sunday, game times all day
JM Upper (8-9 YOs) Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays
Minors (9-10 YOs) Saturday, games times all day
Majors (10-12 YOs) Sunday afternoons
Girls Softball (9-16 YOs) Saturday afternoons

OTHER IMPORTANT DATES

Sunday February 1, mandatory try-outs for ges 9-12 for Minors and Majors Baseball (tryouts at BMCC gym – details to follow by email).
